Improved yaw control using wind farm information

Wind turbines are designed to operate when yawed to an appropriate angle relative to the wind direction. Typically, this is done using measurements of wind direction from the turbine's wind vane. It has been speculated for some time (and some research on the topic has shown the potential) that using information from across a wind farm can allow wind turbines to control yaw direction better.

This short project will focus on the first stage of collective yaw control, using wind anemometry from across the wind farm to inform the yaw control of indicidual turbines. The yaw control will be built in The University of Strathclyde's existing wind farm simulation model, Strathfarm.
